Math and Spelling Decline Hit During Summer Break
As parents, we know that summer vacation benefits our kids tremendously through outdoor play, family connections, and relaxing time. However, did we realize how the time away from the rigors of school can cause spelling, math, and reading comprehension skills to dramatically decrease? According to the Review of Academic Research, “the effects of summer break was more detrimental for math than for reading and most detrimental for math computation and spelling.”
As school peeks right around the corner at our kids, how can we help jump start their skills and begin the school year on a healthy note? Depending on age level, 20-30 minutes of the following every day until school starts:
1) Independent reading
2) Math problems involving skill level computation
3) Creative writing
4) Expository writing
