Looking for expert college essay help? Total Writing Solutions provides one-on-one college essay coaching for high school students applying to colleges and universities across the country. We help students brainstorm compelling topics, write authentic Common App essays, develop supplemental essays, and submit applications that showcase their unique strengths and experiences.

How exactly do you help students write their college essays?

We work one-on-one through a structured but flexible college essay coaching process. It begins with guided conversations designed to uncover meaningful stories, values, experiences, and interests that reveal who your teen truly is.

From there, we brainstorm topics, create an outline, and develop multiple drafts together. Students do the writing; I guide the thinking, structure, and refinement. The result is a college essay that sounds authentic, compelling, and unmistakably like your student.

How do you help students choose a college essay topic?

Choosing a strong college essay topic is one of the most important parts of the process. Through structured conversations and brainstorming exercises, I help students identify meaningful experiences, relationships, interests, challenges, and moments of growth.

The best essay topics are not necessarily the most dramatic—they are the ones that reveal character, values, perspective, and self-awareness.

What if my teen feels like they don’t have anything interesting to write about?

This is one of the most common concerns I hear from families, and it is almost never true. Many students assume they need a major achievement or dramatic life event to write a strong college essay.

In reality, many of the most effective essays come from everyday experiences such as family relationships, hobbies, school experiences, jobs, friendships, and small but meaningful moments of growth. My role is to help students identify the stories they often overlook.

My teen is a strong athlete. Should they write about sports in their college essay?

Sports can be an excellent college essay topic when the focus goes beyond the game itself. Admissions officers are not looking for play-by-play sports stories—they are looking for insight into character, growth, resilience, leadership, and identity.

If athletics has shaped your teen’s values or perspective, it may be a strong foundation for an essay. Together, we determine whether sports is the best topic or whether another story would better highlight the student’s strengths.

How do you work with students who struggle with writing?

Many students come to me feeling intimidated by writing. My process begins with conversation rather than drafting.

Through guided questions and discussion, I help students clarify their ideas before they begin writing. We focus first on ideas and structure, then on drafting and refinement. Many students who initially describe themselves as weak writers finish the process with essays they are proud of.

My child is already a strong writer. Can coaching still help?

Yes. Strong writers often benefit significantly from college essay coaching because the personal statement requires a different skill set than academic writing.

Advanced students may need help selecting the most strategic topic, developing emotional depth, avoiding overly polished or generic writing, and ensuring their essay supports the overall college application. My goal is to help strong writers create essays that are both well-written and memorable.

When should students start working on their college essays?

The ideal time to begin college essay coaching is during the spring or summer before senior year. Starting early allows students to explore ideas thoughtfully, revise without pressure, and reduce stress during application season.

I also regularly work with students on tighter timelines in the fall.

Do you help with supplemental essays as well as the Common App essay?

Yes. In addition to the Common Application personal statement, I help students with supplemental essays, including “Why This College?” essays, short-answer responses, scholarship essays, honors college applications, and activity descriptions.

Each piece is developed strategically so the full application tells a clear and cohesive story.

Can a college essay really affect admissions decisions?

Yes. At many colleges and universities, especially those with competitive admissions, students often have similar grades, coursework, and extracurricular profiles. The college essay helps admissions officers understand the student beyond the numbers.

While no essay guarantees admission, a strong essay can significantly strengthen an application by adding clarity, personality, and depth.

What are your college admissions results?

Over the years, students I have coached have been admitted to colleges including Harvard, Duke, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, UNC Chapel Hill, the University of Michigan, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Indiana University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Ohio State University, University of Iowa, University of Minnesota, Texas Christian University (TCU), Elon University, High Point University, Sewanee: The University of the South, Appalachian State University, Miami University (Ohio), University of South Carolina, University of Alabama, Auburn University, University of Tennessee, the University of Florida and the University of Georgia and many other universities and liberal arts colleges.

While no ethical college essay coach can guarantee admissions outcomes, strong essays consistently help students stand out and present a clearer, more compelling personal story.

What colleges do your students apply to?

My students apply to a wide range of colleges and universities across the United States, including highly selective universities, flagship public universities, private universities, and liberal arts colleges where students find the right academic and personal fit.

This includes the schools listed above and many others.

What are the biggest mistakes students make in college essays?

Some of the most common mistakes include choosing topics that are too broad or impersonal, focusing too heavily on accomplishments rather than reflection, trying to impress rather than being authentic, and starting too late in the process.

Another common issue is writing without strong structure or narrative clarity, which can usually be improved with guided coaching and revision.

The strongest essays are personal, reflective, specific, and reveal genuine insight into the student through relevant detail.

Do colleges know if an essay was written with AI?

Colleges are increasingly aware of AI-generated writing and are looking for essays that reflect a student’s authentic voice and thinking.

While AI tools can sometimes be helpful for brainstorming and organization, the final college essay should always be written in the student’s own voice and reflect their real experiences and perspective. My coaching process ensures students use tools appropriately while producing authentic, credible writing.

What makes your college essay coaching different?

With more than 25 years of experience teaching writing and working with students, I provide highly individualized college essay coaching tailored to each student.

I help students uncover meaningful stories and develop essays that reflect who they truly are. Parents often share that the process not only strengthens the essay but also builds confidence, clarity, and stronger writing skills as students prepare for college.
